Issue 2: The Puppy, the Smoking Gun, and One Health

Dragon flying over Mount Fuji by Hokusai — 1849

I learned about One Health solutions in the field, the hard way!
Mom, Dad, two young children were all admitted for severe cases of campylobacterosis https://www.cdc.gov/campylobacter/guillain-barre.html and released after treatment, but that was not the reason for the call. They were all re-admitted with a second round of illnesses and Mom and the children recovered. Dad was diagnosed with GB and an astute physician asked for an environmental health investigation. We did. It took my team a matter of minutes to find “the smoking gun,” a mall-bought puppy with diarrhea. Of course, the samples collected matched Campylobacter species among the family. Finally, I was seeing a definite (proven) zoonotic link that was not rabies or food-borne. West Nile virus and 9.11 (the new bio-terrorism threat) in 1999–2002 was the beginning of the new era for all-hazards readiness. I attached one of my papers inspired by my field work. One Health is the solution.

Best,

Chris
